History

The Western Sydney Cycling Network was founded following a call for community action by Fairfield City Council in September 2006.

Fairfield City Council advertised its intention to establish an energetic cycling club to undertake activities including:

  • Community cycle rides on the local cycleway network
  • Management of a bicycle loan system
  • Management of a bicycle donation and repair/maintenance scheme
  • Promotion of local cycleway routes and recreational opportunities

Important Milestones

2006

  • Sunday 24 September 2006 - A community bike ride and establishment workshop was held in Cabramatta.
  • Wednesday 18 October 2006 - A club establishment meeting was held and the name Western Sydney Cycling Network adopted.
  • Sunday 26 November 2006 - Christmas meeting/cycle ride and adoption of organisational structure, rules and action plan.

2007

  • Wednesday 7 & 8 February 2007 - In partnership with Fairfield Community Resource Centre and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations - a Work for the Dole Scheme commenced to develop the Bicycle Recycling component of the Club activities.
  • Friday 20 April - Winner of Club Competition for a Launch Slogan announced and a bike sponsored by the Fairfield Advance Newspaper awarded to a local resident.
  • Wednesday 28 March 2007 - Move to a Fairfield City Council purpose built Club House on the grounds of Fairfield Showgrounds.
  • Thursday 24 May 2007 - Western Sydney Cycling Network - official launch and opened to the public. 2007 Bicycle Rides Program announced and Bicycle Recycling Facility open for public loan and donation of push bikes.
